Gallery Unveils New Art Exhibit: Punch, Crank, Pop

The Butte College Art Gallery is thrilled to announce its latest art exhibition, Punch, Crank, Pop, featuring the distinctive works of three ceramics artists: Katie Applebaum, Linda Fitz Gibbons, and Brian McNamara. The exhibit will captivate art enthusiasts and ceramics aficionados with its innovative approach to transforming everyday objects into unique artistic expressions that delve into themes of identity, technology, and creative vision.

Punch, Crank, Pop will be on display at the Butte College Art Gallery from Monday, October 2, through Thursday, November 2. The grand opening reception, featuring artist Brian McNamara, will take place on Wednesday, October 4, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Co-curated by Butte College students Caleb Hovland and Ezra Van Houten, this exhibition promises to offer visitors a fresh perspective on the world of ceramics and the limitless possibilities it holds.

About the Artists:

Katie Applebaum:

  • Hailing from Paradise, CA, Katie Applebaum earned a BFA from California State University Chico in 2019, with a minor in environmental science/sustainability.

  • Post-graduation, they completed a residency at the Cub Creek Foundation in rural Virginia, studying under the tutelage of master potter John Jessiman.

  • Katie's art explores and celebrates utilitarian objects from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

 

Linda Fitz Gibbons:

  • Born in New York and currently residing and working in Woodland, CA, Linda Fitz Gibbons holds an MFA in visual arts from the Art Institute of Boston/Lesley University College of Art + Design, as well as a BA from Yale University.

  • She served as a resident artist at Vermont Studio Center in 2019 and 2017 and was an artist in residence at Anderson Ranch Art Center in Colorado during the spring of 2010.

  • Fitz Gibbon is an art adjunct faculty at Cosumnes River College in Sacramento, CA, and a Teaching Artist for YoloArts.

 

Brian McNamara:

  • Brian McNamara, a native of Southern California, discovered ceramics through community college studies.

  • His artistic journey led him to explore identity, cartoons, world-building, and monsters, ultimately culminating in his thesis work for his MFA from Tyler School of Art and Architecture in Philadelphia, PA.

  • McNamara's thought-provoking work has graced galleries in Philadelphia and New York City.

  • Currently, he imparts his knowledge as a ceramics instructor at Chico State.

 

The Butte College Art Gallery, located on the first floor of the art building at Butte College's main campus, invites the public to experience this remarkable exhibition, which showcases the limitless creativity of these three talented artists. The gallery is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
